This is not unique to North Carolina, most East Coast Lighthouses are unique in shape or markings, so that ships at sea could tell which lighthouse they were looking at. This is before there were any radios, electronic navigation, ect. The sailors only had a sextant to determine where they were based on the stars, and had a book that identified the differnt lighthouses so they could identify where along the coast they were. The North Carolina coast is considered the Graveyard of the Atlantic because it is very trecherous and there are so many shipwrecks off the coast. Many of them before modern navigation and weather forecasting.
