Best Lighthouses In New England

best lighthouses in new england
Going to the East Coast (New England in the middle of October. Any suggestions for places we should visit?

We're flying into Portland Maine and have a week. We will be renting a car and want to see: lighthouses the coast, covered bridges and historical sites. We're interested in the 6 New England states. Big cities are not a primary focus as we are from Seattle, but should Boston be on our list? Any suggestions as far as where to go to see the foilage? What about Vermont, and Cape Cod? Thanks. Oh and lobster! Is Maine the best place?
Thanks, but I really would like personal suggestions, not just another website!
You all have given me wonderful information. Just what I was hoping. As far as the plane fare, the reason we are flying into Portland is because we got a great, great deal on tickets! Thanks, again everyone.

First of all: If you like the lifestyle and culture and political attitude of cosmopolitan Seattle you will LOVE Boston, and Portland secondly.

Second: If you are northwesterner micro-beer lovers you will also love Portland (and New England, at least north of the Mass. Turnpike I-90) as it rivals your neck of the woods for
micro-brewers and great brewpubs (there ought to be some airline that sees a marketing opportunity in something like "Portland to Portland Beerlovers Weekend Specials").

But - I have to say it - the New England coast from Portland to at least Beverly, MA (about 15 miles from Boston) is lovely (more quaint than Washington's but w/o mountains or many cliffs) but if you are flying into Portland (why are you flying expensively into Portland when Southwest Air will cheaply get you to nearby Manchester????) in mid-October that's not what is going to stun you compared to inland areas which will then be at or approaching the height of foliage season (where the covered bridges are, too!). Suggestion: take just 3 days for Portland and Boston and in-between and the rest
for leaf-peeping. The two most beautiful areas easily reachable I would recommend for first timers: (1) the Monadnock area of central southwesten New Hampshire extending into north-central MA and (2) the Easten ridges of the Green Mountains which is traversed by Rte 100 (considered one of America's most beautiful byways) from North Adams, MA to Waterbury, VT. It will be like just out of the calendars. Full of great restaurants and wonedrful country inns to go along with the many covered bridges and hillsides of flaming orange, red, yellow and purple.
