The Lovely Seaside Resort Of Ilfracombe

A lovely spot along the Devon coast is Ilfracombe. This town has its own harbor that is surrounded by cliffs. There was once an Iron Age Celtic fort sitting above the harbor on Hillsborough Hill. There have been settlements since the Iron Age though they were separated into two different communities; one a farming community closely linked to the local parish and then a fishing community.

Many ships would take refuge in the Harbor at Ilfracombe as it was sheltered from the many storms that plagued the Bristol Channel. There were also several trade routes from Ilfracombe to Kinsale and Tenby that used the harbor. This spot was known as a major embarkation point for the British going to fight the Irish in 1247. You can visit the historic tunnels that were cut into the cliffs that let individuals gain access to the cliff.

Atop Lantern Hill you will find the oldest working lighthouse in the UK as this has been in use for over 650 years. The name of the lighthouse is ST Nicholas chapel. There is also plenty of gorgeous coastline and wildlife to take in as Ilfracombe is part of the North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This spot is particularly known for its rugged coastline.

The main industry for a long time was directly related to the sea and transport as this was an important port. As more ferries began to cross the Bristol Channel it turned into a tourist destination. The railway lines also extended and reached Ilfracombe making it even easier to travel. Since its climax as a seaside resort light engineering has turned into the main industry.

You can attend one of the many different festivals and celebrations that occur throughout the year as the town loves to celebrate its heritage. You can attend the Christingle at Christmas, a May Day walking celebration, carnival in August, Victorian celebration, week ling heritage celebration sometime in June, and the Lighting of the lights held in November.

Unfortunately the town has had its share of disasters as there are many fires that destroyed significant sections of town. These fires occurred mainly because of the overcrowding of buildings that were erected in Victorian times. One of the most famous blazes required more than 20 fire trucks before it could be put out. This is why the town is lacking historical buildings.

There are plenty of water sports and cruises to enjoy at the harbor as well as museums, an aquarium and Leisure Park.
