Dover Kent: Visit The White Cliffs Of Dover
The town of Dover Kent is in Kent county in the South East end of England. It is right on the narrow area of the English Channel and is across from France. Dover is a major ferry port that goes to France through the Port of Dover. The cliffs along the channel are the famous White cliffs of Dover made famous in story in song.
The town has probably been inhabited since the Stone Age. There have been many archaeological discoveries that show that it was a great maritime port even during the Bronze Age. The Romans used Dover as a major communication stop and forts with lighthouses were built to guide ships in the night. Because it is near France it has always been important to Britain. Because of the cliffs and high land that flanks the valley it is a very protected area from invaders.
The Straits of Dover is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the entire world. Lanes have been set up so that ships and ferries can safely pass through going both ways. This is all controlled by the Maritime and Coastguard of HM Customs in town. You will also see cruise ships in the straits.
When you hear of someone trying to swim the English Channel this is where they either start or end. It is because of the narrowness of the strait, yet it is still quite a long way to go to get to France. This is a great sea fishing area. Fishermen can fish from the beach, the pier or out on boats to catch the Dover sole.
There are many things to see in town including the Dover Castle. This is a twelfth century Norman Castle. Sir Winston Churchill and Lord Ramsey planned the evacuation of Dunkirk at this castle. In the castle is the Underground Hospital that was used in 1216 during the war when the French tried to take England at Dover. There is a great exhibit featuring Henry the VIII and the history of the time when he was in power. On the ground is a beautiful church that can be viewed along with one of the Roman lighthouses next door.
Another point of interest is the Crabble Corn Mill that was built in 1812 in order to feed troupes that defended the coast against Napoleon's intrusion. There were many mills along the river Dour at the time and were run by water power. There are guided tours and there is even a tea room at the mill.
Dover Museum is worth a visit with original pictures of the growth of the town and many artifacts. There is the Bronze Age Boat Gallery that has the oldest vessel known. Another museum is the Roman Painted House which was a hotel with beautiful wall paintings and just as the Romans heated their buildings in Rome with under the floor heating this building was heated in the same manner. Also see the Dover Transport Museum that features all types of vehicles that have ever existed.
If museums are not your cup of tea then check out Goodnestone Park Gardens are take a boat ride by the White Cliffs of Dover. There are also walking trails that go through some of the most beautiful scenery ever. There are many different shopping opportunities and some great restaurants. It is a wonderful town to visit any time of the year.
