The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

Let’s start with the most famous, the Great Pyramid in Giza near Cairo, Egypt. Built as tomb for the Pharaoh Khufu/Cheops. The last still standing Wonder. It is the most visited archeological site in the World.

The hanging gardens of Babylon. These multi-leveled gardens were according to ancient reports 75 feet high. The gardens had complex machinery for circulating water. It was destroyed by an earthquake. The ruins of the hanging gardens are on the territory of Iraq today.

The Statue of Zeus in Olympia. Dedicated to the king of all gods in the ancient Greece. The statue was built in Olympia, the place of birth of the Olympic Games. The temple which was built to house it was 14 feet tall. Like almost every Wonder it was destroyed by an earthquake.

The Temple of Artemis. The construction took around 120 years which is dedicated to the daughter of Zeus, Artemis. Almost entirely made of marble the temple was 377 feet long and 180 feet wide. After being destroyed, Alexander the great let it rebuilt. Just to be destroyed again. Today the ruins are on the outskirts of the Turkish city of Selcuk.

The Mausoleum in Halicarnassus. It was built as tomb for King Maussollos by order of his sister and widow. According to ancient records this tomb was 135 feet high. It was destroyed by an earthquake (not really surprising). The ruins of the Mausoleum were used by European Crusaders to build the castle of Bodrum, the modern name of Halicarnassus.

The Colossus of Rhodes. Located on the Greek island of Rhodes this gigantic Statue of 98 feet was the Wonder which was short-dated. Finished in 303 BC, the location where exactly this Statue stood is not exactly clear, it was destroyed after 66 years….by an earthquake, right.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria.  Strictly speaking the Lighthouse was not built in Alexandria, Egypt. It was erected on a small island some miles away from the Egyptian coast. For many centuries the Lighthouse was with its 440 feet the tallest structure on Earth. It was also the first Lighthouse ever built. Destroyed….I guess you already know: Earthquake.
