Heritage Hotspots in the UK
From castles, churches, railways to historical homes, the UK has plenty of Heritage attractions available. Here is just a sample of some great sites worth visiting:
Old Hastings, East Sussex: The battle of Hastings was fought just six miles inland, yet John Logie Baird conducted the first ever television transmission over three yards to Queens Avenue. While in Hastings, visitors can also visit the old town hall which was built in 1823, where several displays and exhibits take one back in time. Accommodations can be found right in Hastings, in East Sussex, south east of London.
Scarborough, North Yorkshire: Visit Britains First Resort and learn about the natural springs discovered in 1626 by a Mrs. Farrow, who claimed the water from the springs was a remedy for many ailments. This made the borough very popular and caused Scarborough to be named Britain’s first planned resort. While in Scarborough, visitors can also enjoy the older part of town down by the harbour. Scarborough is known as the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire cost, and provides visitors with several great accommodations. Also located in here is the famous Scarborough Castle that was once overtaken by German warships in the first world war. The Scarborough railway system provides services from York on the North TransPennine and from Hull on the Yorkshire Coast Line.
Culzean Castle, Ayrshire: Visit the historical home of one of Scotland’s oldest families, the Kennedys. Focussed around the Robert Adam mansion, a wing specially designated to President Eisenhower in appreciation for the US support during the first world war. Built by the 10th Earl of Cassilis, David Kennedy in sections around 1777 to 1792. This castle overlooks the sea and is situated on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland, within the Culzean Castle Country Park and is opened to the public. Convenient accommodations up and down the Ayrshire coast can be found.
Start Point Lighthouse, South Hams, Devon: This lighthouse was erected in 1836, and stands 27 metres tall. One of the most remote lighthouses in the country, it took a live-in staff of eight to maintain. Visitors will be entertained with legends of piracy and shipwrecks. This area is considered one of Britain’s mildest climates and is a popular holiday spot. Aside from all of the natural beauty the area has to offer, many unspoiled and historic towns such as, Dartmouth, Totnes, Modbury and Ivybridge give visitors a taste of Britain’s charm. Located between the cities of Salscomb and Kingsbridge, these towns are easily accessible. Guests can enjoy shopping, great restaurants and fine accommodations in any town along this coast. Visitors continue to return to this area year after year as it provides plenty of historical attractions and activities to suit any budget.
Holy Island, Lindisfarne - Northumberland: A popular retreat for monks seeking solace at Britains holiest offshore retreat. The Lindisfarne Gospel was written here somewhere between the late 7th century and the early 8th century. Christianity was first established in the Kingdom of Northumbria by King Oswald in the 7th century, where the great cathedral was eventually constructed. The nearby fishing community of Lindisfarne is still prospering with visitors who come to enjoy the great shopping, pubs, and beaches. Lindisfarne is located about 5 miles northeast of Belford and about 9 miles southeast of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway which gets covered when the tide is high. The Island itself is approximately 2.5 miles long x 9 miles around. Comfortable accommodations can be found throughout the area or in the city of Belford.
