Hauntings Lighthouses

hauntings lighthouses
Why did lighthouse keepers go insane in the late 1800s?

It is not because of ghosts or hauntings but it is because of some sort of ingridient or chemical. A hint is that it is one reason why people do not like the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine. Help me out, I can't find this answer anywhere.

My best guess would be mercury because according to the lighthouse entry on wikipedia, the lens used to float in mercury to reduce friction.

I found this quote "Mercury vapour is a very poisonous substance, the symptoms of mercury poisoning being madness. It has long been thought that breathing in mercury vapour over a period of years was the reason why some lighthouse keepers went mad. The theory is unproven, however. The vast majority of lighthouse keepers who spent the whole of their working lives in close proximity to these very large masses of mercury remained as normal as you and me" from here http://www.titanic-nautical.com/Lighthouses-Lighthouse-Funfacts.html useful as well.

Here http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/ybenjamin/detail?entry_id=48800 it looks as though thiomersal is sometimes used as a preservative of vaccinations. And on researching thiomersal on wikipedia, it looks to be comprised of mercury.
