Lawn Lighthouses
lawn lighthouses
Why is there a bull fighting category?.............................?
Only kidding.
I wanted to ask how I could go about turning Lawn bowls into an extreme sport.....alas, no lawn bowls category.
Does Yahoo not care about the things that interest people the most?
No lawn bowls category.
No lighthouse catergory.
No chariot catergory........... So I ask my question here.
Would lawn bowls appeal to the greater unwashed masses if it became an extreme sport?.....A little blood spilt? Turning lawn bowls into a blood sport. Lets face it. Lawn bowls is duller than dull to watch.
All hints and suggestions would be greatly received.
Lawn bowls is an extreme sport for some participants. My granny suffered a herniated disc last fall, when she released thw ball. Her boyfriend (pardon me, "significant other") was watching from the clubhouse at the time, from his wheelchair. He is still recovering from a broken hip he suffered when he tripped on the green. But, let's face it, that is not the norm. They just have a string of bad luck, and neither of them spilled any blood on the green, just in the operating room...
You are absolutley right. Lawn Bowls is duller than dull to watch. It is at least as dull as watching three kids play cricket in the park after sunset. So, we could start by painting the balls with day glo flourescent paint, and putting shiney tin foil markers on the green. There, the game is no longer "dull", as long as there is a blacklight and a spotlight available to make things shine.
No lawn bowls category. No lighthouse catagory. No chariot categroy. No Whale tail soup category. But the vegans get their own category, and what about the wrestlers?
Okay. Maybe we can petition for a blood sport category. Or a blood spilt category? Or a "be cruel to vegetables and tubours category"?
I am reminded of a problem that happended at our local lawn bowls club last week. It seems that with all the rain, we have had an infestation of grubs hatch out, and they had to actually poison the green with some sort of antigrub potion. It did not do a very good job, or maybe they just didn't wait long enough, so they called in a team and they dug out a good portion of the greens, and resodded. This was exciting. The first matches after the resodding were horrible experiences, as the greens were a bit lumpy. They called in a greenskeeper of some sort, and he hauled in a huge roller. He pushed that bugger up and down the greens for hours, and when he was done, the greens were so flat that most of the grass was broken off at the dirt. Then they watered the heck out of the new sod, and had a luxurious smooth green in a matter of days. Dull game, lawn bowls.
Certainly, introduction of lawn gnomes into the game could create some excitement. But don't they require the presence of bulls and chiles? Bulls would only divot the greens, as has been pointed out. (This would, of course, create many exciting lawn restoration moments...)
There is one suggestion I make, with a certain fear and trepedation, that would add a great deal of excitement to the sport. We could execute the loser at the end of the match, either by public firing squad or public hanging. Now, I do not mean to offend those who are opposed to the death sentence, but this is the only way to add any excitement to the sport. Actually, it might be the end of the sport, since the last man standing would have no one to play against...
Duller than dull... that's for sure!
Exploring the Cape Province
The Cape Province is one of the most beautiful areas of South Africa for walking, with rolling vineyards, craggy mountain slopes, a glistening coastline and brightly coloured flowers. Its diversity makes it ideal for long and varied walks, wandering through vineyards, dry desert plains, forests and beaches. And the bright Cape sunshine will add to the pleasure of walking through this beautiful corner of the earth.
The Cape Winelands
The winelands situated just outside the city of Cape Town are famous for their beauty as well as for the outstanding wine that they produce. For years, tourists and Capetonians alike have flocked to these outlying areas when the sun is out for strolls through the vineyards and afternoons of merry wine tasting. There are plenty of picnic spots where you can enjoy a bottle of wine with your tasty lunch, lie back in the grass and gaze out over the rolling hills and surrounding countryside.
There are a number of wine-producing areas in the Cape Province ideal for walking. South Africa's climate is perfect for afternoon strolls through vineyards, with the warm sun and ripe grapes making walks all the more enjoyable. Two of the best regions are Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, both situated about an hour's drive from Cape Town. Both areas have quaint town centres with beautiful old buildings and restaurants serving delicious meals. Franschhoek has a reputation for being South Africa's culinary capital, hosting a number of restaurants run by world class chefs.
In and Around Cape Town
Cape Town is an exceptional city with both a vibrant culture and beautiful surroundings. Table Mountain, situated just above the city centre is an iconic symbol of hiking in South Africa. This unique-looking flat-topped mountain attracts many keen hikers, and for those who don't want to trek all the way to the top only to have to do it all the way down, the cable car is available to transport you back down to the bottom again.
Cape Point, also known as Cape of Good Hope, is another great outdoor spot loved by walkers. You can walk through the fynbos in the reserve, and look out for baboons that are resident in the area. And you can climb to the top of the lighthouse and look down over the churning water where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.
For a gentler day out, strolling through Kirstenbosch Gardens will be lovely. The beautifully kept lawns and colourful flowers will not be disappointing, and the purple mountaintops above you provide a beautiful contrast to the sun-filled trees, plants and trickling streams below. These gardens are the most beautiful in the country, making them the best botanical gardens for walking in South Africa.
Karoo
For a change of scenery on a South Africa hiking holiday, you can spend a few days in the Karoo desert. Vast expanses of open land await you, with little more than some hardy fynbos growing in the area. While it may be bare, this area has a haunted and unique beauty of its own, and completes a well rounded trip to the country.
