Tips for filming during sunset/sunrise?
I am going to be filming around a local lighthouse for a film class project. I want to shoot during a sunset/sunrise to give it a softer look.
First. Is it better to film during sunset or sunrise?
Second. Do you have any tips for filming at these times? Either settings or tricks w/ the white balance or anything to give the image a good look. I have to do it all in-camera editing for my class so no post production.
im on the east coast. so the sun is coming over the ocean
The composition of the shot will determine the sunrise/sunset part of your question.
Color balance? Leave that alone. Why shoot a golden sunrise or red sunset, just to color correct it and get rid of their intrinsic beauty?
While the rays of the sun are a bit softer at those times of the day (more atmosphere for the light to travel before exposing your film), it will not be that much softer. If you want a mystical look you may want to rent a Harrison fog filter for your camera (16mm or video?). Fog filters soften sharpness and moderately lower contrast while causing bright parts of the picture to glow as if surrounded by a vaporous mist, cloud, or smoke
