General responses to fear?
I have observed that we tend to react to fear in four different ways.
The fight or flight of course. Either you attack the danger or you run away from it
Or the denial response. Kind of like when a child hides behind their hands when they are scared. The mentality of if I can't see the scary thing it can't see me. Many adults tend to do this as well by not looking at something evil or scary with the idea that that will keep them safe
Or the freezing response where people freeze in fear and cannot move.
What is your usual response to fear? Also is there any other common responses to fear?
Mine is normally to attack and if not I run away. I've frozen once when I got pulled into a riptide because I'm seriously afraid of being deep out in the ocean and I've frozen when I got stuck on a really high height at the top of a lighthouse. (stupidest thing I ever let my family convince me into doing.) I've never tried to deny my fear.
Fight responses include:
Immediate raising of defenses, so as to avoid any possible consequential harm. For example, a person scared will raise there hands up in preparation for an attack. This response can quickly lead to aggravated assault, because the instinct of being attacked, or touched by something frightening is to kill the threat, or at least injure it. Example; kid pops out of trash can, other kid punishes him in his masked face.
Heart races, eye balls bulge, brain becomes attentive, muscles compress, mouth opens exposing teeth (weaponry). Brain chemicals called endorphins are released, along with adrenaline. Also dopamine which regulates balance. Quick gasp of air, and direct eye lock-on.
Subsequently fear can result in feelings of revenge, and possibly manifested as in the 9/11 case.
Flight responses and stimuli:
The stimulation of flight fear, has to be dooming, and really threatening. The more dooming, the more desire to flee, this can be graphed, and is shown in the calculation Ff = T + I
Where Ff is flight fear, t is threat, and I is intensity.
The response is cowardice away from threat, where instinct for survival comes in full throttle. If there is no escape the person goes into panic attack, or accepts their doom. If they have an escape, they look for what ever exit they can from the situation.
