Can you compare Cape cod and Hampton beach?
I have been to cape cod and i loved it, it is pristine, not very commercialized - I mean outer cape. What about Hamptons? How does it look like there? Is it possible to bike there? go whalewatching? any lighthouses? thanks so much
I am sorry . I am not american, so I did not know there are "two "hamptons. I meant Long Island-hamptons
I assume you mean Hampton Beach NH, not "the Hamptons" on Long Island, NY?
The major difference is that the ocean water on the south side of the cape is significantly warmer than the ocean water on the north side of the cape. Being that NH is north of the cape - the ocean water is freezing. To compare to CC, Hampton Beach itself is kinda trashy. The coast of NH is different though. "Hampton Beach" is just one short section. Cape Cod is more a summer vacation place, where people live and work year round on the NH seacoast. So the whole of the NH coast really isn't intended to be a "vacation destination".
There are several sections of beach on the NH coast.
Seabrook Beach - absolutely without a doubt the best kept secret in New England. Long beautiful beach with just beach houses. Issue - no place to park and beach access points are limited. To bad you watch the sunset over the Seabrook Station containment dome.
Hampton Beach proper, which I call the white trash riviera. This part is arcades, bars, crappy restaurants, t-shirt shops, the sea shell stage (free live music every night in the summer), the Casino Ballroom (google it for the schedule), hotels, cottages, the Hampton police palace. They are trying to clean up their act and it has improved significantly in recent years. The is where the seafood festival is the weekend after Labor Day. They are trying to cater to families, but for the most part it's teenagers hanging out.
North Beach - also considered Hampton. It's it very short distance from HB proper. This is a long beach (~2 miles long) just east of Rt1A, protected by a ~20 foot high seawall. This is the beach where all the locals go and it's well known for surfing. At high tide there is no beach, the water goes up to the seawall.
Another mile or so up Rt1A is North Hampton State Beach, which is small and the only business there is the Beach Plumb ice cream/sandwich stand. This is also the approximate point where the property values climb significantly. One side of Rt1A is beautiful homes, the other the Atlantic Ocean. Dan Brown (author of Divinci Code) has a home on Rt1A located between N. Hampton Beach and Jennes Beach.
Further up Rt1A are the Rye NH beaches - Jennes Beach & Wallis Sands.
For bike riding, the whole NH seacoast is very popular for that. There is sidewalk along the whole of Hampton's beaches and other sections of Rt1A, but not all of it. You can ride from Salisbury, MA to Portsmouth, NH. It's a very scenic drive.
