How is 'Brideshead Revisited' by Evelyn Waugh a modernist text?
I have been set an essay for college to discuss the modernist styles and themes in the novel and compare with the following:
To The Lighthouse - Virginia Woolf
Dubliners - James Joyce
A Collection of Short Stories - Katherine Mansfield
I've read the other three and come up with some ideas. Has anybody read Brideshead Revisited (currently reading) and noticed some characteristics of modernism? Thanks. x
It is distinctly not a modernist text. The playing with point of view by Woolf and even some of the experiments (in incompleteness) in _Dubliners_ (later texts are much more modernist) seem to me modernist. Katherine Mansfield is not a modernist writer either; i can't understand what would make one think she was. She's narrow and brittle and writes very slight stories, but they seem traditional enough.
Likewise, _Brideshead Revisited_ is a conventional story, Victorian even, with religious implications. It has nothing to do with the deep seated discontent with old forms that Joyce and Woolf manifested. In fact, it likes those forms.
