How do you plot a position of a ship when you don't have GPS or RADAR, at night using only one lighthouse?
You have a compass, right? You use the compass to determine your bearing from the lighthouse.
You can calculate the distance from where the lantern is first seen (approximately) by multiplying the square root of the height of the lantern above sea level by 1.17, and adding the square root of the observers height above sea level by 1.17.
For example, the Portland Head is about 101 feet above sea level. If you are on a sailboat and your eyes are about 10 feet above water when you see the lantern, your formula would be:
sqrt(101) * 1.17 = 11.76
sqrt(10) + 1.17 = 3.7
So you would be 15.46 nautical miles from the Portland Head
