Which are the best places to visit in Halifax?
My husband and I will travel to Halifax and I would like to know which places must visit, I have heard something About Lighthouses, people told me Halifax is so beautiful, I hope somebody can help me. We have been checking some information on internet...thanks
Please note: the centre of Halifax is VERY steep. Do plan all visits carefully, so you don't have to walk up- and downhill more often than necessary.
1) nature:
The Public Gardens near the city centre are very nice; then there are other parks (Point Pleasant, etc.) close by. Also, there are a lot of beautiful wildlife areas outside Halifax.
2) sights:
The Citadel is well worth a visit; it doesn't look like much from the outside, because it's hidden for strategic reasons; once inside you can spend hours taking pictures of Halifax from the battlements.
The parliament (Province House) is a nice place to visit for 20 or 30 minutes, provided it's open.
The huge Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, if you like art.
In addition, there are many beautiful buildings to marvel at, and take pictures of; just stroll around a bit.
Just outside Halifax, there's the Mount Uniacke estate; check on the internet if the house is open while you are there.
Other places most tourists visit on short day-trips from Halifax are Peggy's Cove (complete with lighthouse) and Lunenburg (beautiful colonial architecture). But if you are planning to do short trips outside Halifax, you should also consider visiting Windsor and Wolfville.
3) shopping:
Spring garden Road is the main shopping street: it lead from the city centre to the Public Gardens; the so-called "Historic Properties" on the sea-front contain some interesting small shops, as does the Barrington shopping centre next to it.
Also, check out if the Farmers' Market near the brewery is on while you're there - it's very interesting, but often very crowded.
