What Do Lighthouses Do most often, warn ships away or guide them towards it?
May seem like a stupid question (!!) But are they used more often to guide ships to safe harbours or to warn them away from shallow waters? Is either one more generally regarded as its primary function?
Today's lighthouse is a light that is on but very little reliability is expected--it shows the pilot of a boat the location and identification by its distinctive paint scheme. The charts are onboard and indicate sightable landmarks--lighthouses included--it can be a tall antenna mast--a steeple..a watertower--anything to use as a visual reference--then the tide rise and fall, rocks, jetties, wrecks, bouys, sand bars, etc are noted for navigation and distances and mileage.at sea.
