Life In Looe - Cornwall, United Kingdom

Looe - Cornwall is a small fishing town on the South West tip of England. The population is just over five thousand people, which is especially small when one considers that Looe is technically two towns combined in one. The villages of East Looe and West Looe are connected by a bridge, making them one.

Looe shows archaeological evidence of being inhabited for at least the last three thousand years. It was recorded in the famous Domesday book, has a giant ancient stone circle which was probably a fort, and was a valuable town held by William the Conqueror. The structure of the town is quite advanced, considering its age. It is on a grid, which is an advantage many small old towns do not have.

The town is also frequently flooded, so the bottom parts of houses are used more as garages with storage for boats, while the living space is upstairs and away from water. Fishing is the primary source of economy and most of life there revolves around close proximity to the Looe river. Even in the twelfth century, a monastical order was founded in an area that could allow it to double as a religious building and a lighthouse.

The bridges that have been built over the river, connecting the two towns, have been crucial to its success. The bridges have been rebuilt several times, the current bridge being a product of the Victorian era. The port itself is important, since it allowed for strategic fleet launches in English military history. It also provides a site for easy export of tin and arsenic, though the town itself specializes only in the fishing, boat building, and shipping trades.

Later, the economy expanded slightly to include textiles, though Looe was much more situated to focus on fishing. As travelers began to go in droves to Newfoundland, Looe was a natural shipping-off point. It got a great deal of business through those passing through. Tourism increased and it eventually became an area for fashionable spa treatments where the rich could go to relax.

The area gets a lot of publicity today for being a good zone to fish for sharks. Many anglers come here for the reputed high quantities of sharks. It has the national Shark Angling Club headquarters there. There are plenty of exciting ocean activities to be had in the town.

It also hosts some of the best New Year's parties in the world, despite its small size. The whole town participates and goes out on the streets in costumes or fancy dress. It has often been ranked as the best place in the United Kingdom to celebrate New Year's Eve. It is small enough an area so you do not feel claustrophobic from the crowds and it is still warm enough to wear costumes without coats.
