Why was North Carolina's Cape Hatteras Lighthouse moved?

When the lighthouse was built in 1870, it was approximately 1600 feet from the shoreline. By 1987, the rate of coastal erosion was so great, that the shoreline was only 120ft from the lighthouse, despite ongoing coastal protection measures that people tried, in order to slow the rate of erosion.
A committee was formed to investigate the best way to preserve the lighthouse, and it was decided that relocation was the only feasible option.
Between June 17 and July 9 1999, the lighthouse was moved half a mile inland, again placing it approx 1600ft from the shore. This was a massive engineering feat, which was named the 2000 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
