The Thriving West End of Glasgow
Although certainly containing the most well-known on these shores, London is not the only major UK city to boast an exciting and entertaining West End district. Glasgow, the European City of Culture in 1990 also has a thriving arts, entertainment, shopping and residential West End area that offers a fantastic insight into Scottish culture and is a 'must-visit' for any traveller to the city.
Situated at the heart of the West End is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum that features work by celebrated Glasgow architect, designer and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh, as well as many other superb pieces of art. It is Scotland’s foremost museum and art gallery, recording the most visitors to any such UK institution outside London. Found on the banks of the River Kelvin, the museum contains a plethora of works by French Impressionists, pieces from the Dutch Renaissance, a fair share of Old Masters and a considerable number of works from Scottish colourists and members of the early 20th century Glasgow School.
Indeed, Mackintosh was one of the celebrated members of the Glasgow School and as well as many examples of his art on display in the museum, his distinctive buildings can also be seen around the city; including the Glasgow School of Art and the magnificent 'Lighthouse' at the Glasgow Herald Building.
The University of Glasgow campus is also largely sited in the Bohemian West End, with students keen to take advantage of the many excellent cafes, clubs and bars found there. As well as proving an educational nirvana, the West End is also home to many upmarket hotels, exclusive designer boutiques and cutting-edge restaurants. Both domestic and international passengers arriving on flights to Glasgow frequently head straight to the hotels in this area from the airport, as not only is there so much in the vicinity but there are also other prominent Glasgow features, such as Buchanan Street close by.
In addition to being plumb in the centre of the city’s premier shopping area, Buchanan Street is also home to many of Glasgow’s theatres. A part of the central street grid system that prevails on the north banks of The Clyde, it is adjacent to Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street; also fantastic places to shop.
On the entertainment front Glasgow also annually stages the renowned Glasgow Comedy Festival which runs throughout March and features local comedians, as well as famous established acts. But, whether it’s the architecture, culture, comedy, shopping, nightlife, arts or anything else that draws visitors to Glasgow, they are never short of things to do.
