what is the distance of a light house from sea ?

I want to know if there is any standard rule for the distance that should be maintained between the sea and a light house? How will the ship know at what distance the lighthouse is from the shore?

Lighthouses are placed wherever needed to mark the navigational route or hazard for which the lighthouse was built.

There are lighthouses that actually stand in the ocean. Good examples would be the Eddystone Light at the southern tip of England, which is built on a rock in the sea waves, and Sand Key lighthouse off Key West Florida, which stands on pilings sunk into a sandbar under water about 2-1/2 miles off shore.

At the other extreme there are lighthouses on high cliffs that may be two or three miles back from the surf. Many of these are in New England and the Great Lakes region where the shores are high.

Every lighthouse and other navigational light is marked on the nautical charts that are issued by the US Coast and Geodetic Survey and the governments of other countries for their own shores. All ships carry these charts as required by law. Because the navigator or chief of the watch can see the lighthouse and also look at its position on the chart, it is a simple matter to determine the ship's position by triangulating with two or more lights or other landmarks.
