Underground Walks

The earth is a beautiful place, especially some of the natural wonders that it creates. If you are looking for a journey of a lifetime, then peruse through the suggestions below for some magical sights.

• Underground City, Montreal, Canada – this is the largest man made underground network in the world, with 120 separate entrances. There are 20 miles of elaborate tunnels, used to access the lower levels of shops, banks, hotels and the metro system, to protect people in the extreme cold weather conditions.
• Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky – the oldest part was formed ten million years ago, nine and a half million years before humans.
• Aktun Chen Eco Park Caves, Yucatan, Mexico – in this peaceful underground cave you can walk by a subterranean river and see unusual rock formations. You can explore by foot, or scuba dive, but there is a surreal sense of peace here.
• Cu Chi Tunnels, Vietnam – not for the faint hearted, you have to crawl through a small trap door to the narrow tunnels, and enter an underground village, where thousands of people were based during the Vietnam War. It was bombed many times, but never captured.
• Hannan's North Mine, Kalgoorie, Australia – take a cage lift 100 feet below the ground to tunnels built during the gold rush.  Kalgoorie still produces 10 percent of the world's gold.
• Weilickza Salt Mine, Krakow, Poland – none centuries of salt mining have produced some intricate underground caves here in Poland, with more than a million people a year visiting the UNESCO site.
• Berlin Nuclear Bunker, Germany – underground bunker that slept 3560 people gives you a chilled feeling. It was designed to protect people from nuclear warfare and could keep you underground for 14 days.
• The Paris Sewers, France – take a tour around the intricate systems which sees 1.2 million cubic metres of water gush through, and buy a postcard!
• The Catacombs, Rome, Italy – visit the hidden world of the necropolis beneath the ancient city, where Rome was a dangerous place for early Christians.
• The great pyramid, Giza – the only wonder of the ancient world that still survives, the granite was brought from Aswan, miles away.

Wonders of the world are fast disappearing, with the hanging gardens of Babylon and the Lighthouse at Alexandria completely gone. Go and visit some this year. Grab your passport, Travel Insurance and go!
