This question is about Trigonometry and its from my Geometry homework HELP?
The question is: Here, we have a sail boat that is 300 feet from shore. The angle of elevation from the sail boat to the top of the lighthouse is 20'. How tall is the lighthouse? I don't want the answer can someone explain to me how to solve this problem I have a huge test coming in a week.Also its says to use something called SOH-CAH-TOA
The 300' is perfectly horizontal because it is the sea level, and x is the height so it is perfectly vertical. That means they intersect at a right angle and in this case make up a right triangle.
Lets list the info we have...
a = the angle of incline.
300 = the adjacent (A in SOH-CAH-TOA) leg of the triangle.
and we want to find...
x = the opposite (O in SOH-CAH-TOA) leg of the triangle.
So now we need to setup our equation.
Since we are dealing with O and A, we need to use the tangent operation (T in SOH-CAH-TOA).
tan a = x / 300
tan 20 = x / 300
multiply by 300 on both sides
300 * tan 20 = x
Be sure to use degree mode (not radian) when entering this formula in your calculator.
