When most people think of Charleston € ™ s history, they think famous architectural sites of the war is at the center of Lighthouse Charleston. Although Morris Island is one of the most photographed structures Historic Charleston, often overlooked by tourists who come to area. For the locals, the lighthouse is a very recognizable symbol and also a subject that had been in the news over the past years I'ma years. € ™ ve included some information on the lighthouse € ™ s history residents and tourists so you can appreciate this story landmark.Â

The flagship of the Morris Island is one two lighthouses in Charleston, Sc.A and only about 300 meters from the northern tip of Folly Beach, the lighthouse has become a symbol of Folly Beach and even James Island. lighthouse on Morris Island received much attention recently because the island switched seats dramatically.Â

When the lighthouse was built in 1876, fifteen ships surrounded the island to guard Morris and family. And most people nâ € ™ t know it was painted black and white stripes after the Bodie lighthouse in North America Carolinae Banks. extra € ™ s problems began in 1889 when it docks constructed to improve the chain leading the Charleston Harbor. These sources have changed over the flow chain, threatening the island Morris erosion. Because of this erosion, some of the buildings surrounding the Lighthouse moved to an area safer, and the light was automated in 1938.Â

For 1962 the flagship of Morris Island was decommissioned and replaced by Lighthouse Sullivan Island. € ™ s When the U.S. Coast Guard announced it would tear the lighthouse, the people Charleston received a petition to save it.

Lighthouse Island Morris passed into the hands of several owners Private from 1965 until 1999, when an organization called Save the Light bought for $ 75,000. Save the Light has raised over $ 700,000 to preserve Morris Island Lighthouse. What began as a campaign is now a popular base of three hundred members of the organization with money and support of people from as far away as italy.it Save the Light plans to work with the Corps of Army Engineers to preserve lighthouse. can learn more about Save the Light on its website.
