Aperture and Shutter Speed Setting for taking pictures in direct sunlight?
I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for an aperture setting and a shutter speed setting for taking pictures in direct sun. I have a really nice lighthouse/sun shot I want to take but I know if I meter correctly it wont be exactly want I want because it will be way to fast on the shutter and way to small on the aperture. Any suggestions for what settings to use to make this what I want?
Well, the sunny 16 rule says that on a sunny day at f/16, the shutter speed = film speed. So for ISO100 film/digital, you'd want 1/100sec. However, metering properly is far more accurate than any rule-of-thumb like this, or other suggested setting that someone could offer. Any generalized setting that one might suggest is totally hit-and-miss for your specific situation.
But since you imply that you understand metering, and don't want a small aperture/fast shutter for artistic reasons, then you probably need a neutral density filter. A neutral density filter acts like sunglasses for your lens, allowing you to use a larger aperture or slower shutter under a given light setting. They are used, for instance, when a photographer wants a waterfall to blur a bit even on a sunny day, or when a photographer wants to use a wide aperture even when using powerful studio lights. This will allow you to meter properly, but still use a wider aperture and/or slower shutter.
(I assume that you are using the lowest ISO film or setting available to you).
