Waves And Lighthouses
waves and lighthouses
Has anyone watched 'The Hours' with Nicole Kidman. Is it an accurate portrayal of Virginia Woolf or not?
Ive read a lot of Virginia Woolf's work, such as Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando, The Waves and Jacobs Room. I havent actually got round the watching the film with Nocile Kidman. Is it any good and does it show an accurate portrayl of what Virginia Woolf was really like as a person?
I also have a second question which may seem a little strange. Apparantly, she was a lesbian. Is this true or not? And also, what do you think about Virginia Woolf's novels. Do you find them hard to understand and dense? Has anyone read any of her works. Which is your favourite and which on do you find the most challenging to read.
For me, my favourite is Mrs Dalloway. My least favourite is The Waves and Orlando.
The Hours is based on the book of the same name, by Michael Cunningham. It's a great novel, one of my favorites!
I like Virginia Woolf a lot, and from my understanding the portrayal of her in the movie/book is quite accurate. I would recommend the book or movie, especially if your favorite is Mrs. Dalloway. The book/movie focuses around three women in different times - Virginia Woolf as she writes Mrs. Dalloway, a woman in the 50's as she reads it, and a contemporary woman living out a version of it. It's rather brilliant.
As for her sexuality, she had a love affair with Vita Sackville-West and close friendships that a lot of scholars speculate about with Madge Vaughn (and inspiration for the character of Mrs. Dalloway), Violet Dickinson, and Ethel Smyth.
She was also, however, very close to her husband.
