The lighthouse was the one useful 7 wonders of the world that was built. The mirror mounted onto the side of the lighthouse could reflect light from the sun more than 35 miles off shore. It was built around 290 BC and was approx 134Metres tall. As the coastal waters at this time were very dangerous to navigate Ptolemy the elder commissioned the building of the lighthouse and it was completed after his death by his son. Sostratus was the architect and the popularity of the lighthouse led the island of Pharos where it was located to translate in French, Spanish and Italian to mean lighthouse. When the capital city was moved to Cairo the lighthouse fell out of use and was the last wonder of the world to be destroyed about 1480AD. Hope this helps...
