Jacob comes brings people to the island. Remember when they are on the beach, his enemy we'll call smokey was saying that bringing people to the island would cause problems. He was trapped. Maybe, Being the good guy he was trapped, and that is why he is trying to escape. Look at Jacob, He goes around changing people. Stalking them, remember the lighthouse. He saved John locke Who is now smokey. He saved Richard, to be his servant and advise his people. Notice, He never went to help the others against the dharma guys? He stayed hidden. He had the others attack those on the beach. He had ben's daughter killed. He built the island up and made it so great that the manipulation from jacob made everyone choose paths not their own. smokey on the other hand; saved ben,sun from the mercenary force charles wildmore sent. He punished and judged people. He saved ben numerous times. He didn't kill sayid. So who really is the bad guy?
I have a similar theory to this. Although I'm wondering if jacob and smokey were halves of the same man. Jacob the good, Smokey the evil kind of like dr. jekyll and mr. hyde. Notice the theme of good and evil, with the black rock and the white rock in Jacob's cave, and smokey threw the white one into the ocean after Jacob was dead saying it was an inside joke. And remember way back when locke taught michael backgammon, there was a white and black good and evil thing going on then as well.
